Welcome to KHN’s website.

PT Kayan Hydropower Nusantara (KHN) was established in 2018 and is a joint venture between PT Adaro Energy Indonesia Tbk, PT Kayan Patria Pratama and Sarawak Energy. Through the combined experiences of all partners, KHN is progressing toward our vision to be the driver for Renewable Energy Based Industrial Development (REBID) in Indonesia by delivering sustainable hydropower development.

Tapping into the immense potential of our natural resources, we are currently developing our first renewable hydropower project, the 1,375MW Mentarang Induk Hydroelectric Project (MIHEP) in Malinau, North Kalimantan. Through this project, we aim to contribute to a greener energy sector and power the sustainable growth of Indonesia.

As a National Strategic Project, MIHEP will be energising Indonesia's Green Industrial Park in Bulungan, North Kalimantan, once completed. The industrial park is one of Indonesia’s REBID and the largest industrial park in the country. MIHEP will also support Indonesia’s target of achieving a 23% renewable energy mix share by 2025 and Net Zero Emissions by 2060. Hence, this project is crucial to support Indonesia’s goal of becoming a developed country by 2045.

MIHEP will also enable significant socio-economic transformation in North Kalimantan, by catalysing infrastructure development, utilities and economic opportunities, and workforce upskilling for communities in the surrounding area.

To ensure sustainable and responsible development of this project, KHN is guided by relevant Indonesian laws and Good International Industry Practices (GIIP), including the International Hydropower Association Hydropower Sustainability Standard. We want to minimise the negative impact of the project and its operations, and deliver maximum positive impact to stakeholders.

As the developer of Indonesia’s first large-scale hydropower project, our aspiration is for MIHEP to serve as a pioneering example to future large hydropower projects in the country and we have been receiving strong support from our stakeholders in progressing the project.
