Flash floods hit Malinau Regency, North Kalimantan on Friday, 22 September 2023 causing thousands of houses and public facilities to be submerged. The flood, which submerged several sub-districts in Malinau, including Mentarang, Malinau Kota, West Malinau and North Malinau, was caused by the overflowing of the Mentarang River and Sesayap River. PT Kayan Hydropower Nusantara (KHN) through the Malinau Regency Government since Friday (22/9) has also assisted by sending ready-to-eat food and emergency supplies such as basic necessities (rice, instant noodles, coffee, sugar, bread, mineral water), tarpaulins, stoves and kerosene for people in Paking Village and Harapan Maju Village whose areas were severely affected. In addition to these two locations, KHN also distributed prepared meals to the people of Malinau City who had taken refuge on the side of the road. This condition is very concerning because the flood was so unexpected and happened very quickly. Many access roads were cut off and impassable, which hampered the purchase and distribution of aid. On Sunday, 24 September, the floods have started to recede and many access points are now passable. We hope that the post-flood recovery process will run smoothly and all Malinau residents can return to their normal activities.
